Why - 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writing

The rearview mirror doesn’t lie. I see so much from this vantage point.

Charlotte reaches her hand over to hold Isaac’s hand. He reaches towards her and quickly pulls it away. Both laugh out loud. She makes bubbles with her mouth and Isaac follows suit. I hear Charlotte saying, “Hit. Hit. Bubba, hit.” I look up to see him raising his hands and crashing them on his head. He doesn’t stop smiling as he hits himself over and over; waiting for his sister’s laughter to follow. I see Charlotte putting her sunglasses on and off. I see Isaac sucking his thumb. Isaac’s legs stretch over the car seat and he grabs his toes bringing them to his mouth. I could watch the sweet movements of his feet all day.

I could watch them from here to eternity.

Coming home from preschool Charlotte’s school bag is filled with her artwork and notes from the day. As I drive she pulls one item out at a time. “This. Mama. This.”

“What is it?”

“This!” She exclaims.

Sometimes it’s her latest finger painting. Another time a cut-out animal. Sometimes the snack schedule. Occasionally a small toy from the day’s birthday celebration.

Then there’s those precious moments when I look up and all is quiet. Their heads hang low and their eyes shut. Sleep and calm have taken over. I could watch them all day. Their breathing in and out.

I look back in the rearview mirror. My heart fills with joy and gratitude.

What did I do to deserve such abundance and beauty in my life?

Why me?

Why not me?

**All month I'll be participating in 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes. Each day I'll take some time (sometimes 5 minutes and sometimes a little more) to sit down and write. It's about the discipline of writing each day. It's about listening to the words from within. It's about letting creativity work in me. I'll share my writing at some point during the day on my blog. Thanks for reading.
